What's SUMINAGASHI?

墨流しは日本古来9世紀頃からある日本画の技法です。

墨流しは容器に水を張り、その中に彩色液(カラーインク)や墨などを落とし掻き混ぜ形を作り、和紙や布などに写し取ります。
この技法は西洋に渡り、西洋式の“マーブリング”と呼ばれるものに変化しています。

 

西洋式では技法・素材など少し違っていて、専用の糊の液体にインクを落としますが、

日本式の墨流しは水を使うので、風・気温・水の温度・和紙との相性、

全てが上手く混じり合うことがポイントになってきます。

技術力を磨くことはもちろんのことですが、経験・勘も大変重要になってきます。

Rich in tradition, the Sumi-Nagashi technique dates back to 9th century Japan where it's foundation is based in a time more observant of ritual.

 

An artist begins with a vessel of water, utilized as a liquid canvas.

With a blending of inks and pigments on the water's surface, the artist creates the image.

To capture the artwork, the artist must carefully select cloth or paper that will combine harmoniously with the specific inks and pigments and then float it gently on the water's surface.

 

When the cloth or paper is lifted, the image is transferred and preserved.

 

Successful Sumi-Nagashi pieces such as  *Mr.Tadao Fukuda's beautiful artwork reveal how the artists ability to intuitively combine water, weather, paper selection,and technical skill result in a work of profound mastery.

 

Although the direction I have taken in the development of my Sumi-Nagashi style may be considered progressive by some, I consider myself to be carrying on a tradition and respectfully incorporate traditional techniques.

I feel very strongly about continuing the progression of this tradition and take responsibility for passing it on to the next generation of artists.
